Søvik is a coastal village in Haram municipality, Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, with approximately 1,000 residents. -There’s fishing, swimming, diving, and simply being out on the water in a boat. We have beautiful beaches that are very popular in the summer, a small marina - and some people even go winter swimming!

Søvik sits between fjord and mountains, surrounded by untouched nature. It’s a village where roughly 1 000 residents live close to the outdoors; a place with seemingly endless hiking opportunities for all ages. At the same time, the city life of Ålesund is only about a mere 40-minute drive away. Caroline is one of many Søvik residents who commute to the city.

As an added bonus, the housing market in Søvik and the surrounding area is far less competitive than in larger cities. Søvik School is located in the heart of the village and serves pupils from 1st to 10th grade. Children come from Søvik and the surrounding hamlets, making up a total of around 100 students. Here too, nature plays an important role in everyday life; both the forest and the shoreline are used for play and learning.

And after 10th grade? Well, the high school is just a short drive away. For those pursuing higher education, vocational colleges and universities are only about 45 minutes by car. The municipality provides free school bus service for children who live more than four kilometers from school, along with after-school programs for younger students.

The school also has access to the big Norborghallen multi-purpose hall, which is a gathering place for children and adults alike, both during and after school hours.

There are loads of things to do inside the hall. And it’s not only for those who want to exercise. They also host bingo and lots of other activities. There’s a youth club where the younger generation can meet, hang out, play games, listen to music, and enjoy some snacks.

Love the tunes of trumpets and percussions? So do the band members in Søvik! They have a school marching band and also a brass band in the village. That makes for a good 17th of May — and many other musical occasions.

In Søvik you’ll also find grocery stores, building supply stores, a hairdresser, and the well-known Valaker Bakery. Visitors passing through can stay overnight at Systra Hotel Søvik.

Viking Era

Ancient Roots

People have lived in Søvik for a very long time — in fact, since the Viking Age and long before. The area is rich in traces from that era, including a so-called tjæremile — a large, funnel-shaped structure built outdoors for the purpose of extracting tar from wood and old pine stumps. It was a labor-intensive process that required deep knowledge and careful craftsmanship. The tar kiln in Søvik is built of large stones and measures an impressive 11 meters in diameter.

The Vikings used tar to waterproof their boats, houses, ropes, fishing nets — and even as a form of medicine.

Life by the fjord is wonderful, but the area around Søvik has so much more to offer for those who love fresh air and outdoor adventures.

Living in Søvik means immediate access to fantastic areas for kayaking, road biking, running and mountain hikes — with spectacular ocean views as your backdrop. How about a trip to Lake Søvikvatnet, or perhaps climbing the peaks of Tverrbotsornet, Søvikvarden, or Hagefjellet? You can try your luck fishing in the rivers Niklaelva and Reiteelva, or venture into the cave called Trollhola.

High in the mountains above Hamnsund lies a cave 54 meters above sea level, offering wide-open views toward the western sea. Hamnsundhellaren has been examined by archaeologists and geologists as far back as the late 1800s. Inside the cave, they found bone tools and ceramic pieces showing that people used it during the Early Iron Age (500 BC–570 AD).

In winter, snow blankets the mountainsides. Then, the cross-country slopes are prepared, ready for skiers of all ages. Or take a ski trip off the beaten track, if you prefer.

For the adventurous who want to go further, there are many awesome destinations within easy reach. In just 20 minutes, you can reach ID-huset in Brattvåg for concerts, cultural events, or a round of bowling. About 40 minutes away is the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund, known for its unique architecture and lively urban vibe. Vigra Airport, roughly 45 minutes from Søvik, offers quick access to national and international destinations like Oslo, Spain, and Copenhagen. And within a three-hour drive, you can visit the world-renowned Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Norway’s most iconic natural wonders.

There are also several idyllic beaches, historic forts, and lighthouses nearby — like Ulla Lighthouse and Lepsøyrevet Lighthouse. These make for great day trips and outdoor adventures. Northwestern Norway offers magical sunsets, breathtaking northern lights, and all four seasons in a single day. (Yep, it rains quite a bit.) There’s something truly special about watching nature’s raw power unfold right outside your window.
